Multiword Expression Annotation Markup Demo

Enter text you want to annotate in the first box. It will be displayed below and copied to the second box, overwriting anything that is in the second box.

In the second box, add underscore (_) characters to join words into strong expressions, and tilde (~) characters to join strong parts into weak expressions. A space before or after indicates a gap. For example, to indicate two expressions, one of which interrupts the other:

It even got~ a_little ~worse .

The rendered sentence will be color-coded to show the MWEs as you edit the second box.

If the box turns red it means there is an incomplete/invalid annotation. Hover over the box to see the error message.

Advanced: if consecutive _ and ~ markup is not expressive enough, strong expressions can be indexed numerically after a pipe symbol (e.g. |1) and weak expressions after a dollar sign ($1):

On$1 the advice$1 of a friend I set|2 an appointment~with True_Massage up|2 .
